Food is prepared in SVSU kitchens for various university functions and to feed students.
Food waste, ranging from coffee grounds to pineapple skins, are commonly thrown away. At SVSU, waste is set aside as food for our worms. In 1995, the US EPA estimated that 96 million pounds of food were wasted. Read more about food waste here.
When preparation of food is complete all waste is put into buckets and brought to the greenhouse for our worms to eat. Approximately 50 to 100 pounds of food waste is collected by Dining Services every day.
